AI godfather Geoffrey Hinton made headlines last year for quitting his job at Google. He is now warning that AI could lead to job losses and calling for a universal basic income.
In a recent interview, Hinton expressed his concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on job security.
He suggested that the government should consider implementing a universal basic income to address the potential inequalities caused by unemployment caused by artificial intelligence.
Hinton said: People in Downing Street came to me for consultation and I suggested to them that a universal basic income would be a good idea.
Hinton also highlighted the potential risks of unregulated artificial intelligence. He pointed out that the current development trajectory may lead to extinction-level threats to humanity.
He also suggested that banning military uses of AI might be a better solution.
An X user shared Hinton\’s remarks. Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded: There will be universal high income (not basic income).
Another user commented on Musk’s post: Abundance for all is the path to acceleration.
Musk responded: Having said that, an ideal outcome is uncertain.
Last November, Musk said in a conversation with British Prime Minister Sunak that artificial intelligence may eventually eliminate the need for everyone to work. The challenge for people in the future will be how to find the meaning of life.
