According to China Daily, it is reported that Elon Musk, CEO of the American electric car company Tesla, proposed to conduct self-driving car (FSD) testing in the form of taxis in the Chinese market during his recent visit to China. The Chinese government There may be partial support for the program.
People familiar with the matter told China Daily that in addition to seeking approval for the launch of its state-of-the-art FSD software in China, Musk also proposed implementing the features in taxi services in China.
Sources said that Chinese officials told Musk that China welcomed Tesla to conduct some self-driving taxi tests in China and hoped that it would set a good example. But the authorities did not immediately approve its widespread use of FSD functions.
Musk confirmed earlier this year that Tesla would launch its robotaxis on August 8. The concept has been part of the company\’s ambitious plans.
China is Tesla\’s second-largest market, and industry news reports say self-driving taxis could be a lifeline for the U.S. company to regain market share from local automakers.
Before the FSD feature can be fully rolled out, Tesla still needs to get approval to collect and transmit the data needed to train driver assistance features in Tesla vehicles.
People familiar with the matter said the issue was not discussed in detail during Musk\’s visit to China.
On April 20, Chinese Internet company Baidu held a press conference and announced that it would cooperate with several companies, including Tesla, to launch an advanced lane-level navigation system.
Some media reported that Tesla signed an agreement with Baidu, clearing another regulatory hurdle for its self-driving services.
A source close to Baidu told China Daily that he had not seen any new deals between the two companies related to fire department functions.
The two companies began collaborating in 2020. Tesla has integrated Baidu\’s navigation maps into its cars in China.
The source said that he believes that this cooperation only means that the maps provided by Baidu to Tesla have improved the accuracy to a certain extent. It has no direct relationship with its FSD function.
He said: Tesla does not rely on maps to provide autonomous driving. It also does not obtain a license from Baidu to use map licenses.
According to the regulations of the Ministry of Natural Resources, all intelligent driving systems must obtain qualifications before they can operate on public roads.
Foreign companies need to cooperate with domestic companies that have obtained licenses.
