According to people familiar with the matter, SoftBank Group is negotiating to acquire British semiconductor startup Graphcore, which was once valued at US$2.8 billion.

People familiar with the matter said that the two companies have been discussing for several months, but have only recently progressed to a more in-depth stage of transaction negotiations.
People familiar with the matter said that the financial terms have not yet been finalized and there is still a possibility that the negotiations will break down.
A person familiar with the matter said a final agreement would not be reached anytime soon.
At the same time, SoftBank\’s sales have surged, largely due to its majority stake in Arm Holdings, another British chip design company.
On February 7, Arm released a report stating that its prospects for expanding into more artificial intelligence application fields in addition to smartphones are very optimistic.
Since then, Arm shares have soared about 40%.
SoftBank did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A representative for Graphcore declined to comment.
